kurzbeschreibung
«Les Vagues» reinvents the concept of the museum in the age of cultural participation. The project reflects on a departure from the traditional iconicism of museums and rediscovers the role of the museum as a means instead of a goal. The proposal suggests several additions of educational, creative and residential programs to the standard museum typology. «Les Vagues» incorporates not only the finished art pieces, but also the creative processes. This new museum of the 21. Century is not only an exhibition space, but also a space for creative work, education, research, events, interdisciplinary exchange, restoration and preservation.
In accordance with this idea, the museum incorporates a sequence of exhibition spaces that can be adapted to a variety of different requirements. On top of this the visitors can actively engage with art through participating in events in the auditorium or attending art courses in the workshop space. These courses will be regularly held by the rotating artists in residence. Furthermore the studios of these artists can be opened up towards the museum to create a dialogue between the visitors and the active artists. Additionally the restoration studios are visible and provide unique insights behind the scenes of a museum. Another invited group are the creative professionals of Le Havre. They can spend their workday in the creative cafe or the library and exchange ideas with each other. Another highlight of the program is the restaurant on the tip of the museums which extends on the water and provides unique views towards the port and the ocean. With its unique combination of programs «Les Vagues» stimulates a rethinking of cultural buildings from a passive to active spaces.
